#PFF18 • The Observer Effect

Per quest’edizione Birdmen è media-partner del Pentedattilo Film Festival, il festival internazionale di cortometraggi che si svolge a Pentedattilo (Reggio Calabria) dal 31 al 4 novembre. Qui le nostre recensioni in anteprima. Una selezione di sei elementi della redazione comporrà la giuria per la Sezione Thriller.

“The Observer Effect” di Garret Walsh prende avvio da un appuntamento fra due colleghi di lavoro, Maeve e Cian, osservati da quello che sembra essere solo un pericoloso stalker. In realtà, l’uomo che li segue nell’ombra è perseguitato da visioni violente che lo legano a Maeve e condurranno la donna a scoprire un luogo magico e misterioso. Nel suo sviluppo, la storia presenta risvolti complessi, alle volte difficili da comprendere. Ciò comporta che alcuni passaggi non risultino del tutto fruibili. 

Il comparto estetico dimostra grande qualità. L’autore costruisce un’atmosfera contrassegnata da affascinanti tinte dark e la fotografia esalta questa caratteristica, impreziosendo il corto con alcune inquadrature cromaticamente intense. Il décor brilla nella seconda parte del lavoro, quando la giovane scopre il “santuario” sotterraneo, una splendida e particolareggiata grotta costellata di candele, ma anche nelle sequenze in cui il cappotto rosso della ragazza spezza il bosco scuro.

La recitazione soffre invece di alti e bassi: Patrick O’Brien, lo stalker, è senza dubbio autore di un’ottima interpretazione, puntuale e coerente, mentre gli altri interpreti,  esistenti nella prima parte del corto, dimostrano qualche incertezza soprattutto durante gli episodi di maggiore enfasi. La seconda parte del cortometraggio si regge interamente su Vanessa Emme, nella parte di Maeve,  sicuramente adeguata al ruolo.

The Observer Effect, realizzato da Garret Walsh, è un corto dall’atmosfera oscura ed enigmatica. Emerge un’estetica curata, ben ideata e coinvolgente.

“The Observer Effect“ by Garret Walsh, starts from a date of two work colleagues, Maeve and Cian, observed by someone who looks like to be a dangerous stalker. Actually, the man who’s following them from the shadow is haunted by violent visions which bind him to Maeve and will lead the woman to find out a magical and mysterious place. In its development, the story presents aspects complicated to understand and the script, sometimes, is inaccurate and effective enough.

The aesthetical side shows great quality. The author builds an atmosphere marked by fascinating dark colours and the photography brings out this feature, giving preciousness to the film with some chromatically intense frames. The décore shines during the second part of the work, when the young woman finds out the underground “sanctuary”, a wonderful and detailed cave riddled by candles, but also in those sequences in which the red coat of the girl breaks the dark wood.

The acting, instead, suffers ups and downs: Patrick O’Brien, the stalker, gives a good performance without any doubt, precise and accurate, while the other actors, existing in the first part of the short movie, show some uncertainity, specifically in those sequences with higher emphasis. The second part, instead, is entirely based on Vanessa Emme, in the part of Maeve, which results appropriate to the role.

The Observer Effect, made by Garret Walsh, is a short movie with a dark and enigmatic atmosphere. From this product emerges an accurate aesthetics, properly designed and immersive.
